How do moms get in a habit of calling their kids names like sweetie,sweetheart,sweet pea,honey,pumpkin,etc.?

When you love someone so much that you would die for them, names like that just come naturally. I do not have children but I love my neice that much and i can't help but calling her sweetheart, baby girl, etc.

Reply:its quite easy to get into a habit of calling your child something else - when the baby is so new and you are still getting used to the name you have decided on and sometimes you just pick a nickname and it sticks - I call my daughter pumkin and my darling (she really likes this one) and her father calls her rastis!! and her grandmother calls her charlie!! so she has lots of different nicknames.
Reply:Starts from when they are in there belly I think. You have no idea what your having (boy/girl) so you need a name that you can use. Apparently it does help talking to you belly in the later stages and the unborn child recognises voices and sounds. Calling a unborn child a pet name could calm it. I keep calling my belly 'baby'.
Reply:Because they feel affection and love for them and think this is a way to show it.
Reply:I have no idea how this happened...but I started calling my daughter 'Princess' sometimes...and I don't even like that name. I prefer calling her Angel, which is her name, it's so strange how I started using 'Princess'.
Reply:It normally happens when they have more than one child - and it's easier than trying to remember that child's particular name!@~
Reply:I started when my kiddos were babies. It just sounds cuter than thier name. I am from Texas, everone is hunny, sweetie, or baby.
Reply:Pet names are just fun. Many parents create them while the baby is still in utero.

Reply:Just happens! I call my little girl pumpkin or booba, why? I have absolutely no idea. I called my son booger up until recently, just habits that start because they are cute.
Reply:Just a way of showing extra affection. :)


My daughter is Pumpkin to my husband, Princess and Sweetness to me.


My son is Buddy to my husband, and to me, he's my SweetPea and Prince.
Reply:I know that my husband and I have started to call our little girl (who still has 8 weeks to go until her birthday!) bug because she moves around so much! Now the whole family asks how bug, babybug, or emmabug (her name will be emmalynne) is doing...it is funny how nicknames start but very sweet!
